Invitation for Public Comments on Agroforestry/Tree Planting Proposal

Notice is hereby given that the Shire of Wickepin has received a development application on a proposal submitted by Wheatbelt Connect for an Agroforestry/Tree Planning for an environmental planting project at Wyoming Downs (along Malyalling Road, Wickepin North, Woodward Road, Kirk Road and Daton Road). The initiative aims to extend native vegetation on the property while contributing to carbon abatement, biodiversity, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Proposal Overview
Wheatbelt Connect proposes to:

  1. Establish a native vegetation carbon project covering approximately 450 hectares (7.6% of the 6,000-hectare property, including firebreaks).
  2. Register the project under the Federal Government's Emissions Reduction Fund, delivering carbon abatement through Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) over a minimum 25-year period.
  3. Maintain the plantings to ensure at least 20% canopy cover and 2 meters in height at maturity throughout the permanence period of the project.
  4. Support local and regional biodiversity objectives.
  5. Protect and sustain agricultural production on the remaining land by generating supplemental income through carbon farming.
  6. Mitigate further soil salinization in the area.
  7. Allow livestock grazing on the planted areas after seedlings reach sufficient maturity (approximately 3-4 years).
